HOW A DYING KAURI
TREE COMPOSED ITS
OWN REQUIEM
A KAURI CRIES | AUCKLAND COUNCIL | INTEGRATED
Dieback, a deadly disease, was rapidly killing New Zealand's Kauri trees. But these native giants were dying silently, which meant the epidemic was falling upon deaf ears.
We needed a way to help the Kauri communicate their pain.
So, we developed unique software that transposed the tears of a dying Kauri into musical notation, performed in real-time by the Auckland Orchestra.

A Kauri Cries was heard by over 3 million people (a significant number for New Zealand...) and helped see dieback infection rates fall by 16%.
